Asobi Seksu is one of the most interesting bands of the moment. Their beautiful pop with drops of shoegazer makes their last album, "Citrus", one of the most interesting of the last years. If you like Blonde Redhead, you´ll love Asobi Seksu (colloquial Japanese for “playful sex”).
A Letter For The Stars has been talking to Yuki, singer of the band, one week before their awaited performance in Tanned Tin Festival.
Asobi Seksu es una de las más interesantes bandas del momento. Su maravilloso pop con gotas de shoegazer hace de su último álbum, "Citrus", uno de los esenciales de los últimos años. Si os gusta Blonde Redhead, amareis a Asobi Seksu (expresión coloquial japonesa para "sexo placentero").
A Letter For The Stars ha estado charlando con Yuki, cantante de la banda, una semana antes de su esperada actuación en el festival Tanned Tin.

Hi!!!, do you feel exciting about touring Spain?
- Yes, it is a beautiful country from what I've seen in pictures so I'm excited to finally see it in person! The festival we're playing seems really cool with an amazing line up.
¡¡¡Hola!!! ¿Os sentís emocionados de visitar España?
- Si, es un maravilloso pais del que hemos visto fotografías y estoy excitada por poder finalmente verla en persona. El festival donde tocaremos parece muy guay con un apasionante cartel.

What do you think about Tanned Tin?
- It seems really cool with an amazing line up. I'm sad that we won't be there longer so that we can check out the festival, but we're flying out right away.
¿Que piensas sobre el Tanned Tin?
- Parece muy guay con un cartel apasionante. Estoy un poco triste porque no podremos estar el tiempo suficiente para ver el festival completo porque cogeremos el vuelo inmediatamente.

Which bands are you most interested in seeing?
- I really like Dirty Projectors and Acid Mothers Temple is always intense live. I don't know if we'll have time to see anyone though.
¿Que bandas estais más interesados en ver?
- Me gustan mucho Dirty Projectors y Acid Mothers Temple tienen siempre un directo intenso. No si podremos ver a alguno de ellos.

Talking about your last album, what does it mean to you? Is it the most important step on your career?
- Yes, I think we had the chance to create a cohesive album. We are happy with the flow of it from start to finish. And it is our first studio album.
Hablando sobre vuestro último disco, ¿que significa para vosotros? ¿Es el paso más importante de vuestra trayectoria?
- Si, pienso que tuvimos la oportunidad de crear un álbum con verdadera cohesión. Estamos felices con su vuelo desde el comienzo hasta el final. Y se trata de nuestro primer álbum de estudio.

"Citrus" has been critically acclaimed, how important is it for you?
- We weren't sure how people would receive the album so it was very exciting for us to see that it was well received. It's always nerve wracking when you're waiting for the first couple of reviews!
"Citrus" ha sido aclamado por la crítica, ¿que importancia tiene esto para vosotros?
- No estabamos seguros de como recibiría la gente el disco por lo que fué muy excitante para nosotros ver que fué bien recibido. ¡Es siempre una tensa espera cuando esperas el primer par de críticas!

How do you remember your beginning on the world of music? What was your main target?
- I come from a classical background, so it was such a departure for me when I started this band with James. I was very nervous at first, but I loved the idea of creating our own musical world. We had some difficulty finding our audience for the first 2 years. We are happy these days that we have one!
¿Como fueron vuestros comienzos en el mundo de la música? ¿Cual fué vuestro principal objetivo?
- Yo vengo del terreno clásico, por lo que fué como un despegue cuando iniciamos la banda James y yo. Estaba bastante nerviosa al principio, pero me encanta la idea de crear música en un mundo propio. Tuvimos bastantes dificultades para encontrar oyentes durante los dos primeros años. ¡Eramos felices cuando teníamos uno solo!

Your music seems to be sometimes closer to shoegazer and other times closer to pop, How do you define your own sound?
- I agree with you. It is amalgamation of many things, but simply put: an effects-heavy guitar via shoegaze meets Sonic Youth and pop music of the last 5 decades from around the world: Shibuya Kei, French Pop, The Stone Roses, girl groups, etc.
Vuestra música parece estar algunas veces cercana al shoegazer y otras más al pop, ¿como definiriais vuestro propio sonido?
- Estoy de acuerdo contigo. Es una fusión de muchas cosas, pero simplificado es:
efectos de guitarra heavy mediante el shoegazer que encuentran a Sonic Youth y a la música pop de todo el mundo de las últimas 5 décadas: Shibuya Kei, French Pop, The Stone Roses, grupos femeninos, etc.

In our opinion "Thursday" is one of your best songs, could you tell us something about it? How is the typical Asobi Seksu´s song created?
- I originally wrote the melody as a Francoise Hardy sounding ditty in 3/4 time. James liked the melody but felt very strongly about making it song with more drive. The one thing that is synonomous with our sound is a relentless rhythmic drive. One part always pushes into the next. It's always a push and pull between me and James creatively speaking... I'm glad that he won out on changing the feel of Thursday!
En nuestra opinión "Thursday" es una de vuestras mejores canciones, ¿podrías contarnos algo sobre ella? ¿Como se construyen los temas de Asobi Seksu?
- Originalmente escribí la melodía como una Francoise Hardy sonando sucia en un tempo 3/4. A James le gustó la melodía pero pensaba seriamente en meterle más ritmo a la canción. La única cosa que es sinónimo de nuestra música es el rítmico e implacable sonido de un motor. Es siempre un toma y daca entre James y yo creativamente hablando... ¡estoy orgullosa de que él se saliera con la suya y cambiara el espíritu de "Thursday"!

Probably "My Bloody Valentine" is the most important shoegazer band, Do they mean anything special for you? So, what are your main musical influencies?
- Yes, we do love them. James got me into them in college. For James it makes him think of being 16, blasting Loveless on his speakers in his first car and driving around high. I think it's nostalgia for us more than anything nowadays. In that sense, yes they are special. We love all kinds of music and influenced by so many musicians. They all find a way of sneaking into our creative conscious/process. I guess no one lives in a vaccuum....
Seguramente "My Bloody Valentine" sea la más importante banda shoegazer, ¿significan algo especial para vosotros? ¿cuales son vuestras principales influencias?
- Si, a los dos nos encantan. James me los descubrió en el instituto. A James le hace pensar sobre tener 16 años, Loveless atronando en los altavoces de su coche y conducir. Pienso que significa nostalgia para nosotros más que otra cosa. En ese sentido, sí son especiales. Nos encanta cualquier tipo de música y estamos influenciados por muchos músicos. Todos ellos consiguen la manera de envolvernos en nuestro proceso creativo consciente. Pienso que nadie vive en el vacío...

In general, how is an Asobi Seksu´s live show?
- LOUD. Fun? I'd like to think we're fun!

- POTENTE. ¿Divertido? ¡Me gusta pensar que somos divertidos!


Finally, what will you be doing in near future? Are you working in new material?
- We will be touring into December and then finally home to finish writing the next album. We've been working on new material the last couple of months. I can't wait to be in the studio again! That is my favorite thing to do.
Para terminar ¿que planes teneis de futuro? ¿estais trabajando en nuevo material?
- Estaremos de gira hasta Diciembre y entonces por fín iremos a casa a escribir el nuevo disco. Hemos estado trabajando en nuevo material los últimos dos meses. !No puedo esperar a estar de nuevo en el estudio! Es lo que más me gusta.
