Knowing...immanu el /Conoce a immanu el

Recommended by a friend of us, called Eréndira, we have had the chance to discover a new excellent band, immanu el. Before making a remarkable EP, they have just realeased a beatiful LP entitled "They’ll Come, They Come" that, mixing excelent melodic arrangements and epic vocals, is like a fresh breeze to post-rock. We have been talking with Per Strängberg, and these are their views.
Gracias a la recomendación de una de nuestras amigas, Eréndira, hemos podido descubrir a una nueva y gran banda, immanu el. Tras un destacable EP, acaban de lanzar al mercado un excelente largo que lleva por título "They’ll Come, They Come" y que, combinando excelentes desarrollos melódicos y épicas vocales, es todo un soplo de aire fresco dentro del post-rock. Nos hemos puesto en contacto con el lider de estos suecos, Per Strängberg, y hemos recogido sus impresiones.

Maybe you have answered this question many times before, but how you met each other? How the band started?
- My brother Claes started the band and I hook up with Michael and Emil, we are all old friends. Then we´ve have had some different guys for piano/organ, since this year Jonatan are into it and we all think he´s great.
Probablemente hayais contestado esta pregunta en numerosas ocasiones anteriormente pero, ¿como os conocisteis? ¿como surgió la banda?
- My hermano Claes creó la banda y Michael, Emil y yo nos unimos a ella, somos todos viejos amigos. Entonces tuvimos varios chicos para el piano y el órgano, hasta este año que se unió Jonatan y todos pensamos que es muy bueno.

Sweden has an incredible musical scene including bands making very different styles of music, what so you think about it?
- It´s a part of our culture since the 60´s I guess, the popular music culture is have influenced the whole Swedish culture in many ways. Plus we have great opportunitys and new bands even have support from the government, so it´s easy to get started. I think it´s a great country for a musician, that´s for sure.
Suecia tiene una escena musical increible que abarca bandas que practican los más diferentes estilos musicales, ¿que puedes decirnos sobre ello?
- Creo que es parte de nuestra cultura desde los 60, la música popular se ha visto influenciada por la cultura sueca de muchas maneras. Además tenemos grandes oportunidades y las bandas nuevas tienen incluso la ayuda del Gobierno, por eso es sencillo comenzar. Pienso que es un gran pais para músicos, eso seguro.

What has Sweden different from the rest of countries?
- Well, a lot of things I guess. Every country seem to be unique in one way or another, Sweden have it´s own thing... maybe many people think it´s a safe and peaceful place with a very artist-friendly culture, not even when it comes to music but also in design, fashion, architecture, art and so on...
¿En que puede diferenciarse Suecia del resto de paises?
- Bien, creo que en muchas cosas. Cada pais es único de una u otra manera, Sweden tiene la suya propia...quizá mucha gente piensa que es un lugar tranquilo y seguro con una cultura muy artistica y amigable, no simplemente cuando se convierte en música, sino tambien en diseño, moda, arquitectura, arte, etc...

Sometimes your music seems to be a little bit different from the rest post-rock bands (maybe more melodic and quiet) , how do you define your sound? Could we talk about something like “post-pop” or simply “ambient”?
- Maybe, it really doesn´t matter to us I think. In brief we think it´s some kind of indierock / postrock / ambient, sometimes closer to some genre and sometimes not. We just try to create what we like, then people are free to call it whatever they want :).
A veces vuestra música parece un poco diferente a la del resto de bandas de post-rock (quizá más tranquila y melódica) ¿como definiríais vuestro sonido? ¿podríamos hablar de algo así como "post-pop" o simplemente "ambient"?
- Probablemente, aunque pienso que a nosotros no nos preocupa. Resumiendo, pensamos que es algún tipo de indierock / postrock / ambient, algunas veces cercano a algun genero y otras no. Simplemente tratamos de crear lo que nos gusta, despues la gente es libre de llamarlo como prefiera

We appreciatte some similarities between bands like Sigur Ros and Explosions In The Sky, do you agree?
- Well, we all like them and think they are great in their own ways. Two edges of post-rock maybe? Two nice bands.
Encontramos similitudes con bandas como Sigur Ros y Explosions In The Sky, ¿estais de acuerdo?
- Bueno, a todos nos gustan y pensamos que son geniales en su estilo. ¿Quizá los dos extremos del post-rock? Dos buenas bandas.

What are the moments that have marked you as a band?
- Oh gosh i dont know... we make fun of each other quite a lot, maybe that?
¿Que momentos os han marcado como banda?
- Oh Dios, no se... quizá que nos divertimos mucho juntos

Did you start the band with any specific target? What facet of making music excites you the most?
- For me personally it´s to create and express something that could touch someone and give one something nice and lasting.
¿Creasteis el grupo con algun objetivo concreto? ¿Que faceta de la creación musical os gusta más?
- Personalmente, para mí es crear y expresar algo que pueda llegarle a la gente y darle algo agradable y duradero.

How was the recording process of “They’ll Come, They Come”?
- Very long, full of problems and re-takes. But finally it was finished.
¿Como ha sido el proceso de creación de "They’ll Come, They Come"?
- Muy largo, lleno de problemas y re-grabaciones. Pero al final se terminó.

What were some of the hurdles you overcame during the process? And the best moments?
- Technical problems, re-takes, changed songs. The best was when it all worked and sounded like what we had planned.
¿Cuales han sido algunos de los obstaculos que habeis encontrado durante la grabación? ¿y los mejores momentos?
- Problemas ténicos, re-grabaciones, cambios en canciones. Lo mejor fue cuando todo funcionaba y sonaba como habíamos planeado.

Could you choose your favourite song of “They’ll Come, They Come”?
- I think it´s different, very different. But I think "Under your wings I´ll hide" is giving the widest and best impression of our music.
¿Podrías escoger tu canción favorita de "They’ll Come, They Come"?
- Pienso que es diferente, muy diferente. Pero creo que "Under your wings I´ll hide" es la que da la mejor y más amplia impresión sobre nuestra música.

Which non-musical inspirations went into making the record?
- That´s also very different depending in which one of us you are asking. For some of us it´s our religious beliefs, for some of us it´s other things... I can´t really speak for all of us when it comes to that.
¿Cuales han sido las inspiraciones musicales que envuelven al disco?
- Es algo muy diferente dependiendo de quien de nosotros sea preguntado. Para algunos son nuestras creencias religiosas, para otros otras cosas... no puedo hablar por todos nosotros sobre esto.

What were some of the records that you were playing during the recording?
- Everything from renaissance chorals to trip-hop and electronica.
¿Que otros álbums escuchabais durante la grabación?
- Cualquier cosa desde coros renacentistas hasta trip-hop y electrónica.


Have you ever been in Spain? what countries would you like to tour?
- Me and Claes have been to Spain twice (Andalucía and Islas Canarias), we like it a lot and all of us loves Spanish, even though I´m the only one who have sort of learned it. We would love to come to Spain for a tour soon! We´ll see if there´s any booking agency down there that wants to work with us...
¿Habeis visitado España? ¿Que paises os gustaría visitar?
- Claes y yo hemos estado dos veces en España (Andalucía y Islas Canarias), nos gustó mucho y nos encanta el idioma, aunque yo soy el único que ha intentado aprenderlo. ¡Nos encantaría ir de gira a España pronto! Veremos si hay alguna promotora que quiera trabajar con nosotros...

What is next for immanu el? What do you think you will be doing in future?
- Right now we are all focusing on immanu el, writing new material and try to focus on upcoming tours.
¿Que es lo siguiente para immanu el? ¿que planes de futuro teneis?
- Ahora mismos estamos centrados en immanu el, escribiendo nuevo material e intentando centrarnos en próximas giras.
